Heidelberg Castle was first mentioned in the early 13th century. From its origins, the castle had remained relatively untroubled until the 17th century when the Swedes wrought havoc to the stronghold during the Thirty Years’ War (1618 to 1648) and the French during the War of the Great Alliance (1688 to 1697).
